Matt Doherty's injury-time header gave Wolverhampton Wanderers a valuable three points as they edged 10-man Newcastle United 2-1 at St. James' Park.

Doherty's 95th minute header stole the points, to add to Diogo Jota's first-half strike. Ayoze Perez levelled the game with a superb header before the break.

DeAndre Yedlin was sent off for the Magpies in the second-half to make things even harder for Rafa Benitez's men.

Wolves secured back-to-back victories for the first time since early October in the Premier League.

How It Happened

The visitors made the dream start at St. James' Park, when Helder Costa's cross from the right-hand side picked out Jota, who controlled brilliantly on his chest before volleying home.

Newcastle could have been further behind, as Jota's low cross almost found Adama Traore at the far post.

However, the Toon were back level six minutes after conceding, when Salomon Rondon's free-kick smashed the crossbar - and the striker was first to the rebound, and he crossed into Perez, who flicked past Rui Patricio in excellent fashion.

Newcastle's task got even more difficult in the 57th minute, when Yedlin, under no pressure whatsoever, slipped and then pulled Jota back, after he stole the ball.

The referee deemed he was preventing a clear goalscoring opportunity and had no choice but to brandish the red card.

Substitute Raul Jiminez thought he'd given Wolves the lead again but his strike rattled off the crossbar with just over 15 minutes remaining.

Just as it was looking that Newcastle would hold on, despite their man disadvantage, Jota's shot was parried only to Doherty who couldn't miss with his header.

Post-Match Reaction

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez has demanded the introduction of VAR in the Premier League, following Yedlin's sending off.

It was announced recently that the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) would be introduced in the league next season.

"It (VAR) was key to the game - the red card and the elbow on Ayoze Perez. We need VAR now," Benitez pleaded.

"In this game, it would have changed everything. We were doing enough to control the game.

"How can you explain those decisions to all our fans? We did everything we could do for winning this game."

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo was thrilled about his side being able to achieve back-to-back wins.

"We know how difficult it is to achieve back-to-back wins in the Premier League, so I must be happy,"

"The performance, we are going to analyse. We'll look at it like we always do.

"It was not, for moments, one of the best ones, but it was consistent enough for me to say that we stayed in the game.

"We were with our tasks, we stayed in shape. It's very difficult to play against 10 men. Credit to Newcastle, they didn't sit down. They created problems."
