Southampton 2-1 Everton

James Ward-Prowse inspired Southampton to back-to-back victories in the Premier League, after beating Everton.

Ward-Prowse's fantastic second-half strike opened the scoring for the Saints, before Lucas Digne's own goal doubled their lead.

Gylfi Sigurdsson pulled a late goal back for Everton, but it turned out to be too late for the Toffees.

Two successive victories for Southampton has moved them up to 15th, whereas Everton remain in 11th following the loss.

Danny Ings made a return to action for the Saints following his injury, and the on-loan Liverpool striker nearly inflicted pain on his parent club's rivals; but his header was well-saved by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Ings came close once more for Southampton, when his half-volley was batted away by Pickford.

Nathan Redmond was the next player to go close for the Saints, but his low-shot clipped the outside of the post.

Andre Gomes' tackle on Ings saw the ball hit the woodwork yet again and Everton were under the cosh.

The teams headed into the break at 0-0, but Ralph Hasenhuttl's men eventually took the lead, and it was a deserved one.

Ward-Prowse got to a loose ball around 30-yards from goal and smashed past Pickford, who was left helpless.

Southampton were pushing for a second goal and they got it in really bizarre circumstances.

Redmond was through on goal after Ings' pass and tried to take it past Everton full-back Digne, and his challenge rolled into his own net.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was a late substitute for the Toffees, and he had a great chance five minutes from time but couldn't keep his headed attempt down.

Sigurdsson did score, though, slotting the ball into the net after a scramble in the box, but the Saints held onto the maximum points.

The Managers

Southampton head coach Ralph Hasenhuttl: "It was the best game so far, defensively good, we have two chances away but a lot of chances to score, it could have been four or five. It was a very deserved win for us.

"We played good football, we were good in transition and created a lot and we were very balanced so it was a complete team performance and with the right decisions in the right moments."

Everton boss Marco Silva: "To be honest, they deserved the three points even if they scored a fantastic goal when we started the second-half better.

"We had a big chance before them in the second-half but they deserved it because they were more aggressive during the match."
