Brighton 0-1 Liverpool

Liverpool have moved seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table after a second-half Mohamed Salah penalty was enough for the Reds at Brighton.

Salah won the penalty after being fouled by Pascal Gross and the Egyptian converted from 12-yards for a crucial victory down South.

Having lost their first two matches of 2019, the Reds' win has kickstarted their year, and have moved seven points clear as a result.

Salah's penalty in the 50th minute was his 14th league goal of the season, moving him joint top with Harry Kane and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (image via Liverpool FC).

The Reds completely controlled the first-half, with it being played at a relatively slow tempo, especially considering what we're used to seeing from both teams.

Both sides had very good headed chances, though, with Xherdan Shaqiri's flick coming close to finding the corner - and Glenn Murray should have done better with his free header.

Some excellent work from Salah after the restart saw him be illegally challenged by Pascal Gross and Kevin Friend pointed to the spot. Much to the Seagulls' disgust.

Salah made no mistake with a fantastic penalty and a moment of magic from Liverpool's main man was separating the teams.

Brighton were still looking a bit of a threat on the break with Jurgen Locadia often being used as an outlet.

Gross' shot was blocked brilliantly by Fabinho, who put in a solid display playing at an unnatural centre-back position, alongside Virgil van Dijk.

The next big chance of the game was with two minutes remaining, when Salah found himself six-yards out, but the striker shot wide.

The Managers

Brighton boss Chris Hughton: "There's no intent and referees have a hard job, but sometimes you feel things go your way and sometimes you feel some of the decisions don't go your way.

"I felt today, it was one of those days. No malice or anything towards the referee but I though the bulk of the decisions favoured Liverpool today."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "I thought it was an unbelievable and mature performance from my side, I really like that because it's really a new skill and we have to keep that. It's not opera football but it's still a really nice song."
