Premier League Predictions: Matchday 23

Our two mystic gurus are back at it again. Another week, another set of predictions. Some differences of opinion. Let us know yours in the comments underneath!

Wolverhampton v. Leicester City

Jake

This midlands derby at Molineux will be eagerly awaited by both sets of fans as both teams are fighting to finish in the top half of the table.

Leicester have been on a poor run as of late and many foxes fans are calling for Puel to be sacked.

As for Wolves, Nuno has got his Side playing good football this season, but a poor current run of form has seen the black country club drop in the Lower half of the table.

I fancy this one to be tight throughout as both teams have a similar ilk of players within their armoury.

Prediction: 1-1 Draw

Andrew

The two sides enter separated by two points and both firmly entrenched mid-table.

Each team struggled last week, Wolves being dismantled by Manchester City after an early red card sealed their fate and Leicester dropping points at home to an improving Southampton.

There isn’t a ton on the line with neither side fearful of relegation and seventh place being best case scenario at the end of the season.

I think talent is pretty even position by position, so it’ll be tight, hard-fought and end in a stalemate.

Prediction: 1-1 Draw

Liverpool v. Crystal Palace

Jake

Jurgen Klopp's side got back to winning ways last time out away at Brighton, which silenced the critics that were suggesting a potential dip for the Merseyside club.

Liverpool will be looking to add another three points to enhance their push for the Premier League title.

The away side travel to Anfield on the back of a disappointing defeat at home to Watford.

Crystal Palace talisman Wilfried Zaha has been lacking goals as of late but Roy Hodgson will be facing his former club hoping that the Ivorian's luck can change.

It’s hard to see anything but a Liverpool win as the reds have been sensational this season.

Prediction: 3-0 Liverpool

Andrew

At this point, every match feels like a must win scenario for Liverpool with Manchester City lurking so close behind, ready to pounce at the first sign of struggle.

Palace lost at home to Watford last weekend and it’s hard to see them elevating their game enough to get anything from an away fixture at a stadium as difficult as Anfield has been.

Liverpool, even lacking depth in defence, have more than enough quality to stifle Palace’s attacking threat and bag a few goals to have the game won around the hour mark.

Prediction: 3-0 Liverpool

Watford v. Burnley

Jake

Watford fought for a deserved three points against Crystal Palace last Saturday and the confidence will be high coming into this encounter with the Clarets.

A wonderful Tom Cleverley volley inspired the Hornets to three points as the Hertfordshire club move up to seventh in the league.

Burnley have finally found their feet this season after an extremely shaky start had Sean Dyche worrying about a potential relegation fight throughout the course of the season.

Even though Burnley do look a lot better in recent weeks, Watford's tails will be up after their most recent outing and should just edge the three points.

Prediction: 1-0 Watford

Andrew

Both teams looked good last weekend in victory, Watford continuing to stay in strong form and Burnley looking revitalised over the last month and inching their way closer to safety.

As impressive as Burnley have been, I think they’re up against a better side and while they’ll keep the game close throughout, not having the Turf Moor support behind them will have an effect and see them fall to a Troy Deeney goal late.

Prediction: 2-1 Watford

Newcastle United v. Cardiff City

Jake

This is set to be an ultimate six-pointer down at the foot of the Premier League table and both teams will fancy their chances of picking up at least a point.

Newcastle's loss to Chelsea meant the toon drooped back into the relegation zone which will be a dreaded viewing for the St. James' Park faithful.

Cardiff sit just outside of the bottom three and Neil Warnock deserves great credit this season for managing to keep the side fighting for a chance to stay in the division.

This one will be extremely close as both teams really can’t afford to lose.

Prediction: 0-0 Draw

Andrew

This match looks to have the greatest stakes on the line with Newcastle sitting 18th, just a single point between Cardiff and safety from the relegation zone.

Cardiff had a chance to get crucial points at home against Huddersfield last weekend and will feel disappointed that they were unable to capitalise, walking away with a single point. Newcastle hung in against an uneven Chelsea but didn’t have the ability to capitalise after levelling the match near half-time.

This one is a bit of a flip of the coin, but with Newcastle being at home and looking better over the weekend, I’m leaning towards them just barely to get a goal and hold on for the win.

Prediction: 1-0 Newcastle

Manchester United v. Brighton

Jake

The Red Devils look like a completely different side under Ole Gunner Solskjaer after the Norwegian became the first Manchester United manger to win their first opening six games.

This triumph came at the hands of a victory at Wembley against spurs last Sunday which has hugely increased the chances of Ole becoming the next full-time boss.

Chris Hughton has got his Brighton side playing excellent this season and a narrow 0-1 defeat to Liverpool last time out was nothing to be ashamed off. With the current form of this United side, it’s going to be hard for the seagulls to get anything from the game, but they will compete.

Prediction: 2-1 United

Andrew

Manchester United had their defining win of the season at Wembley on Sunday against a very good Spurs side and will feel that a Champions League place is still within touching distance, sitting only six points behind Chelsea.

They host Chris Hughton’s Brighton who gave Liverpool a difficult time but walked away empty handed. Brighton supporters should be very pleased with the way their side has played against even the best the Premier League has to offer.

They’ll put in a valiant effort at Old Trafford, but I can’t see United struggling too long given the form Pogba, Rashford and others are in. United pounce early and fly high for another week.

Prediction: 3-1 United

Bournemouth v. West Ham United

Jake

The Cherries fell to defeat on matchday 22 at Goodison Park against Everton and Eddie Howe will feel disappointed not to at least get a point after his side were in the game for a large period of time.

Bournemouth dropped to 12th after the 2-0 loss and the South Coast club will be looking to get back to winning ways.

As for the travelling side, it’s all smiles and joy for West Ham United as Pellegrini overcome Arsenal for the first time at the London Stadium.

Young Declan Rice inspired the Hammers to a narrow 1-0 win and the East London club will be fancying their chances against Cherries this weekend.

Prediction: 2-2 Draw

Andrew

The Hammers secured a huge win against London rivals, Arsenal, over the weekend and continue showing that they’re one of the strongest mid-table teams and have an excellent manager at the helm.

Bournemouth have been trending down lately and some of the shine is wearing off their free-flowing play that’s been a staple of Eddie Howe’s tenure.

They desperately need to shore up the defence or risk continuing to slip down the table.

My head tells me West Ham should get the win, but I think this is an opportunity for the Cherries to show that they’re better than they’ve been playing recently.

It’ll be high on entertainment, low on defence and level at the final whistle.

Prediction: 2-2 Draw

Southampton v. Everton

Jake

Since the arrival of Ralph Hassenhuttl at St. Mary's, the Saints look extremely well equipped and the talk of a potential relegation battle have soon disappeared.

The form of Danny Ings has been pivotal as his goals to game ratio has been superb since the German took the reins at St. Mary's.

Everton will travel to the South Coast on the back of the impressive 2-0 win over Bournemouth and their confidence will certainly be high coming into the fixture.

This is a well-matched affair but with home advantage, Southampton may just edge the three points.

Prediction: 2-1 Southampton

Andrew

Southampton have been playing improved football under their new manager but are still in a precarious position just a point above the drop zone.

They host Everton who come in off a good performance beating Bournemouth and in position to capture the coveted seventh position in the table.

Even though I appreciate the renewed spirit Southampton are playing with, Everton are stronger across the pitch and will squeeze out a narrow road victory.

Prediction: 1-0 Everton

Arsenal v. Chelsea

Jake

This London Derby has given us some memorable futures over the years and let’s hope this continues this weekend.

Chelsea remain in fourth position as their push for a Champions League place continues to proceed.

Arsenal have been going through a dry patch over recent weeks and Unai Emery will be hoping his sides fortunes change as a win against Chelsea will certainly be a statement to the teams around them.

These two clubs tend to provide a tight battle, so the difference maker could be a piece of individual brilliance.

Prediction: 2-1 Chelsea

Andrew

Arsenal enter their London derby looking to erase a lacklustre display in their shock loss to West Ham.

They’ve already fallen six points behind Chelsea in the race for the final Champions League spot and can ill afford to lose any more ground.

Chelsea have been less than convincing so far in 2019 and even though they are still winning, something’s felt off in attack.

Eden Hazard has been playing as false nine after both Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud struggled to find the back of the net.

This game will be won or less in the midfield where Arsenal will have to press ferociously to disrupt the rhythm of Jorginho, Kovacic and Kante who tend to dominate possession.

I expect both sides to play for all three points and throw caution to the wind. This game will be easy on the eyes, could get a little contentious at times and keep us enthralled until the end. A draw looks like the safest pick here.

Prediction: 2-2 Draw

Huddersfield Town v. Manchester City

Jake

Manager-less Huddersfield town are coming into this game on the back of 10 games without a win.

It’s been a very poor season from the terriers and now that David Wagner has departed, further turmoil may continue.

The fans will be hoping a replacement manager can be announced before the champions come to town on Sunday.

The Citizens are looking to decrease the four-point gap on leaders Liverpool when they face Huddersfield this weekend so I’m sure Pep will be expecting a 10 out of 10 performance from his team.

Because of the current situation, Manchester City should comfortably blow the Terriers away.

Prediction: 4-0 City

Andrew

Huddersfield enter the weekend without manager David Wagner who mutually parted ways with the club Monday.

They sit dead last in the table and welcome reigning champions, Manchester City. City remain angrily defiant on the heels of Liverpool and look to continue mounting pressure in what’s shaping up to be an epic title race for the ages.

I do expect Huddersfield to come up and play at a higher intensity knowing their poor play got a well liked and respected manager removed, but City are far superior and won’t be caught slipping up. City will play with urgency and score at will in a thrashing.

Prediction: 4-0 City

Fulham v. Tottenham

Jake

Fulham are in trouble this season and even though Claudio Ranieri has slightly improved the performances of the West London club, it's looking increasingly unlikely that the Cottages will beat the drop zone this season.

Tottenham will be making the short trip across London after a disappointing defeat against Man United last Sunday and injury concerns are worrying the fans.

Sissoko, Son and Harry Kane all look set to miss out this for the upcoming weeks which may hinder a winning formula for Spurs, as these players have been pivotal to a recent flurry of victories for the North London club.

Fulham look dead of confidence lately and the shear tactics of Tottenham may overcome Ranieri and Fulham.

Prediction: 2-0 Spurs

Andrew

Spurs supporters received devastating news Tuesday when reports showed that talisman, Harry Kane, will be out until March with ligament damage.

They’re also without the in-form Son Heung-Min until February and are in a state of crisis offensively.

They’ll be relieved knowing they travel to Fulham though who only have three victories this season and sit second bottom.

Fulham prospects of safety become smaller by the week and it will be important that Claudio Ranieri builds the side into his image in the event they go down and must quickly fight for promotion again.

This game will be closer than it would have been before Kane’s injury, but Spurs still have balance in midfield, a solid defence and exceptional manager that all help get them over the line this week.

Prediction: 2-1 Spurs
