Sky Sports' Kaveh Solhekol is reporting the Hammers are "closing in on a deal" to sign the Uruguayan forward.

West Ham will meet the €50m release clause in his Celta Vigo contract, and it's understood he could be loaned back to the Spanish team as part of any deal.

The Hammers would smash their transfer record, with Felipe Anderson's £36m move from Lazio last summer, currently occupying the record.

Gomez joined Celta back in 2017 on a five-year deal, and was part of the Uruguay squad at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Marko Arnautovic put an end to all speculation about a move away from East London on Friday night.

Arnautovic posted an Instagram story confirming that he'll be staying put at the Irons - but Manuel Pellegrini is still determined to bolster his attacking options.
