Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has heaped the praise on goalkeeper Simon Mignolet for his 'fantastic' attitude after failing to secure a move away in the summer transfer window, and confirmed he will start against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday at 7:45pm.
The Belgium international was keen to follow Loris Karius; who joined Beskitas on a two-year loan deal, out of the door at Anfield, with Barcelona and some other European clubs interested in signing him.
However, Mignolet was unable to engineer a move away from Anfield this summer, and as a result of that, the 'keeper has so far played second fiddle to Liverpool's new number 1 goalkeeper Alisson Becker who arrived from Roma this summer.
Simon Mignolet has yet to make an appearance for Liverpool to this date, but the goalkeeper is due to make his first appearance in the Carabao Cup third-round fixture at Anfield on Wednesday in what Klopp insists will be a "very strong" Liverpool starting 11.
Klopp had this to say on Mignolet in his press conference today:
"He has been brilliant. It was as you can imagine, the transfer window time is one of two moments in the year when you can make decisions about going somewhere, and, yes, Simon would have been ready to go to another club, to be No 1, wherever in the world. That was clear."
"But we couldn't do it, and since then he has been brilliant. He trains fantastic. It's all good and he deserves that game absolutely tomorrow. I'm really happy to give him that opportunity."
Other than guaranteeing Mignolet's starting place in goal tomorrow in replace of Alisson, Klopp didn't really give much away in terms of the other players who haven't had much game time this season so far.
From his comments, it looks unlikely that Van Dijk will play tomorrow as he is still recovering from his minor rib injury.
Klopp also didn't give much away in terms of Fabinho. When he was asked a direct question about Fabinho, he replied "you have to wait and see for tomorrow", but he did assure the press that he will field a strong Liverpool starting 11, so the new midfielder may get some game time tomorrow alongisde other Liverpool squad players like Shaqiri, Lovren and Lallana.
