ALONSO PENS NEW CHELSEA CONTRACT

Marcos Alonso has signed a new contract extension at Chelsea until 2023.

Alonso has forced himself to be a key defender at Chelsea since his arrival from Fiorentina back in 2016.

The Spanish international was understandably thrilled to commit his future at Stamford Bridge.

"I am so happy to stay here longer and to keep playing for one of the best teams in the world," Alonso told Chelsea's official website.

"It's been a very good two seasons and I am looking forward to more."

With the formation Antonio Conte deployed at the Blues, Alonso transitioned into a left wing-back and adapted tremendously.

However, since the arrival of Maurizio Sarri and the return to a back four, Alonso has once again switched back to an orthodox left-back.

Sarri, back in September, said: "Alonso I think at the moment in this position, left-back, he is maybe the best in Europe.

"Physical qualities at top level, I think. He's doing very well in the offensive phase. I also think he can improve in the defensive phase. He could be the best left-back in the world."

Alonso's attacking qualities really benefits Chelsea going forward, with the Spaniard picking up 14 goals and seven assists in his 64 games with the Blues.

Chelsea club director Marina Granovskaia said: "We are delighted to be extending Marcos' contract.

"In the past two seasons he has developed into an important player for the club, demonstrating his outstanding ability and a fantastic attitude that has helped him become a Premier League champion and a Spain international."
