BURNLEY THUMP BOURNEMOUTH TO KICKSTART SEASON

Updated: Sep 25, 2018

Sean Dyche's Burnley recorded a crucial first Premier League victory of the season against high flying Bournemouth in emphatic style, registering a 4-0 victory at Turf Moor...

Matej Vydra and Aaron Lennon struck within two minutes of each other on the verge of half time, before Ashley Barnes added the gloss onto the scoreline with a second half brace.

The Clarets started the day at the foot of the Premier League table having endured a torrid start to the season including being knocked out of Europa League qualification by Greek side Olympiacos.

Bournemouth however entered the game in superb form having only lost one game in five this season, a stark contrast to their record of one win in their first 8 last season.

Although manager Eddie Howe urged the team to keep their feet firmly on the ground, his side were boosted with the knowledge that they could climb as high as fourth place with victory in the North West.

With England manager Gareth Southgate watching on, Bournemouth's lively start to the encounter was nearly rewarded on 17 minutes, as Dutch defender Nathan Ake's shot looped onto the crossbar via a deflection off of Ben Mee.

The game went through a phase of Burnley pressure, peppering the Bournemouth box with crosses as wingers Lennon and Guðmundsson began to run the game.

However it was Bournemouth who were creating the clear cut chances, particularly on the counter attack, as King was inches away from finding the unmarked Wilson at the back post with a square ball across goal.

This proved to be a turning point, as just a few minutes later on 39 minutes, Burnley rallied to take the lead.

After another teasing Guðmundsson delivery, the ball eventually came to Sam Vokes, who headed it down to the lurking Westwood.

After the Irishman's first volley was blocked, he lined up a second, which hit Nathan Ake before treacling its way through to the unmarked Vydra at the far post who calmly slotted home for his first Premier League goal for Burnley on his first league start for the club.

Just two minutes later, Burnley doubled their lead. Again, the move stemmed from the right and Icelandic Guðmundsson, cutting in on his left before producing a teasing cross towards the six yard area.

With the physical presence of Sam Vokes occupying both Bournemouth defenders, Aaron Lennon snuck in at the back post to tap in.

After switching to three at the back at the break, Bournemouth started the second half brightly, and David Brooks had a golden chance to half the deficit, firing straight at Hart after darting into the box.

Bournemouth's day was summed up on 74 minutes, as the inform Ryan Fraser played a teasing ball into the box from the right, but it was just too far ahead of Josh King. Fine margins...

Burnley were beginning to show signs of the team who surprised so many by finishing seventh last season, they were defending resolutely and as a unit, aswell as looking dangerous on the break.

Eventually The Clarets did add to their lead through substitute Ashley Barnes. The former Brighton man poked the ball home after it kindly rebounded to him after Guðmundsson had struck the post.

Five minutes later, Barnes had his second and Burnley's fourth, sweeping home Lennon's pass after a brilliant counter attack.

It was a stunning way for Burnley to register their first Premier League win of the season, taking apart a Bournemouth side who had been widely praised for their impressive performances so far.

Could the early Europa League exit have been a blessing in disguise for Sean Dyche's men? Up next for them is a trip to Wales to face Cardiff, whilst Bournemouth will hope to get back to winning ways as they host Crystal Palace.
