Free Agent Watch: Six Players to Watch

With the summer transfer window looming, there are multiple excellent players whose deals expire when the season ends. Justin Mulder has a look at some of those players...

David de Gea

Linked with: Real Madrid

The Spanish goalkeeper, who has been under contract at Manchester United for almost eight years, sees his contract expire this summer.

Rumours say that both sides of the party are keen on signing a new deal but there is yet to be a deal announced. Things started to get worrying when it was announced that Zinedine Zidane took the job as first team manager of Real Madrid once again and is very keen on bringing in the Madrid-born goalkeeper to the Bernabéu, in a deal which would see Tbibaut Courtois moving back to England.

With all of these rumours, it makes that the entire situation is quite worrying for United, who might see their most important player leave the club.

The only bright light at the end of the tunnel currently is the fact there is still an option for an extra year in his contract, but this is yet to be activated.

Ander Herrera

Linked with: Paris Saint-Germain, Sevilla and Valencia

From one Spanish player playing in Manchester to another, Ander Herrera also sees his contract expire this summer.

Herrera has proven to be an elite midfielder on Premier League level but has fallen down the ranks in the time José Mourinho coached the club.

Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over as boss, Herrera has had a bit of a revelation, playing significantly more minutes and being a bigger importance to the Mancunians.

However, it has been revealed multiple times that the United board are not willing to offer a new contract to the midfielder as he has been in clashes multiple times with staff over his game-time.

This with the fact that Herrera has revealed he would like to play in his home country again sees the chance of him staying at Old Trafford after the summer break quite slim with Paris Saint-Germain, Sevilla and Valencia all hunting for his signature.

Olivier Giroud

Linked with: Marseille, West Ham and Arsenal

The best way to describe Olivier Giroud’s year is like saying he lives in two different worlds. In one, he was the striker in a world champion team in France, and in the other he is warming the bench for whenever Gonzalo Higuain comes off.

With Giroud’s contract already at Chelsea expiring this summer it is unlikely to see him stay at Stamford Bridge.

Giroud, himself, has stated that he wishes to return to France with Marseille being frontrunners for his signature.

This is probably the most likely deal because Mario Balotelli's contract also expires this summer at Marseille, but with his recent performances could be extended.

Multiple papers also have revealed that both West Ham and Arsenal want his signature. But as West Ham are looking to make their squad a lot younger and Giroud probably not wanting to return to a club who got rid of him a year ago, it is unlikely we will see the Frenchman play in England next season.

Yacine Brahimi

Linked with: West Ham and Leicester City

A bit of an unfamiliar name, but Yacine Brahimi has played for Porto for almost five years and has won the Portuguese league title and Player of the Year award.

The Algerian winger is likely to move away from his current club as the club itself has reported that Brahimi wants to try something new before he becomes too old, With his versatility, Brahimi can be a lethal weapon for a lot of clubs in the Premier League looking to strengthen their attack.

He can play on both sides as a winger and is also capable to play as a attacking midfielder or even a false nine.

With this versatility in hands there is a bunch of clubs looking to add him to their club. Both Leicester City and West Ham have shown interest in the winger but it is yet to be seen where the Algerian will move this summer.

Brahimi could be a signing that leaves clubs at the end of next season scratching their head why they did not sign him.

Diego Godín

Linked with: Manchester United and Inter Milan

Diego Godin is argued to still be one of the best centre-backs in Europe. However, this season, his relationship with his club Atlético Madrid has seen a big decline.

Because of this, it is unlikely he will sign a new contract to keep him in Madrid. The Uruguayan has been linked with both Manchester United and Chelsea on numerous occasions but both these teams never got hold of his signature.

Godín is still an elite centre-back but there have been doubts over his age. He will not we a valuable asset in your team in a year or two so it is likely he will move to a club who need a good defender as a emergency solution.

This is why Manchester United is still a likely option if the Mancunians fail to secure Kalidou Koulibaly his contract.

Inter Milan are also monitoring his current situation and is likely to make a move for the defender so if United want to make use of his services, they will need to act quick.

Adrien Rabiot

Linked with: Tottenham and Liverpool

Adrien Rabiot was described as one of the one of France's biggest prospects. However, this season can be described as a pure disaster for the Frenchman.

After missing out on France their World Cup-winning squad, things got progressively worse for Rabiot.

After getting in an argument with Thomas Tuchel, after a rare loss for the Paris Saint Germain, Rabiot saw himself getting put back in the under-23s team.

After more arguing and fighting it has become pretty clear that we won’t see Rabiot in a PSG kit next season.

Tottenham have made their interest very clear on numerous occasions but have failed to secure the signature of the Frenchman up to this point.

His agent has revealed that if Rabiot were to move to England, Rabiot would be more keen on a move to Liverpool.

With Liverpool becoming more frustrated with the performances of Naby Keïta, the Reds could perhaps be looking for a new midfielder who can fill in that role.

With Rabiot only being 23-years-old, he still has a bright future ahead of him wherever he will move to.
