Divock Origi scored a 96th minute winner after a Jordan Pickford howler at Anfield to give Liverpool a 1-0 win in the first Merseyside derby of the season.

Origi was only introduced in the 84th minute and made the biggest impact to hand Liverpool a crucial win over their neighbours.

Everton undoubtedly feel slightly robbed after a solid performance at Anfield, but a dramatic conclusion means their poor record at Liverpool continues.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Everton started the game in full confidence on Sunday evening and had a golden chance to open the scoring but Yerry Mina couldn't find the target from close range.

Liverpool reacted well and almost struck with an immediate response. Mohamed Salah found Sadio Mane with a chipped ball but the Senegalese forward fired the ball over the crossbar.

In an end-to-end first-half, Everton then came the closest to scoring when Andre Gomes' header was excellently saved by Alisson, and Gylfi Sigurdsson's rebounded effort was blocked off the line by Joe Gomez.

Xherdan Shaqiri was the next man to find himself with a glorious opportunity, but the Swiss forward fired straight at Pickford, clean through on goal.

Theo Walcott had a good opportunity just before the break, but Alisson smothered the winger and forced him out too wide.

The game settled down a bit after the restart, with both teams seeming to tire a bit, but the Toffees were still posing a threat on the break.

Substitute Origi rattled the crossbar after a knockdown from a Trent Alexander-Arnold corner.

It seemed for all of the world that Everton had held on for a point at the stadium just across Stanley Park.

However, in the 96th minute, Virgil van Dijk's volleyed effort looked to be going comfortably over, but Pickford tried to keep it in and then the ball hit the bar before Origi was there for the simple task of heading into an empty net.

It sparked mayhem at Anfield; with Jurgen Klopp running onto the pitch in his celebrations.

THE MANAGERS

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp:

"The game was with unbelievable intensity. Both teams had chances. Both goalkeepers had outstanding performances. In the end it was a very weird goal. I can't imagine the disappointment of Everton. But we got it and we will take it. It is a brilliant night."

Everton boss Marco Silva:

"It was a tough match and a tough result for us. We don't deserve to lose. We challenged them to win the match. I think the draw possibly was the fair result. They didn't deserve it but that is football. It is our life. It is something different every day. That goal you cannot expect to happen."
