MAHREZ SENDS CITY BACK TO TOP

Riyad Mahrez scored early on at Wembley to send Manchester City top of the Premier League, after beating Tottenham 1-0.

Mahrez's goal in the sixth minute was enough as City edged Tottenham at a defeated Wembley Stadium.

Wembley had an NFL (National Football League) event on Sunday and the pitch had clearly taken a battering from that.

Manchester City have now leapfrogged their rivals Liverpool following the narrow win in London.

City started on the front foot and made their pressure count when Raheem Sterling beat Kieran Trippier before squaring the ball to Mahrez, who had the simple job of tucking it home.

Mahrez nearly had a second not too long after but Hugo Lloris did well and tipped the ball onto the post before it travelled wide.

Erik Lamela played Harry Kane through for Spurs' first big chance of the game but an unusually heavy touch from the England striker gifted the ball to Ederson.

City had a huge chance to double their lead after half-time when Bernardo Silva played it to David Silva, who couldn't get his feet sorted and played it to Sterling whose shot was blocked from close range.

Sergio Aguero had a couple of chances in quick succession, with his first low shot a comfortable save for Lloris and his volley being palmed away from the France international.

Lamela had a glorious chance to equalise in the last 10 minutes when played through by substitute Dele Alli, but the ball bobbled up on the horrific pitch and the Argentine couldn't keep the ball under the crossbar.
