CITY SET TO OFFER FODEN A NEW CONTRACT

It is understood that Phil Foden is to be offered a new long-term contract by Manchester City, following a string of impressive performances.

Reports of this come after Foden scored his first City goal against Oxford United in the Carabao cup where the young Englishman put on an impressive display.

Foden's current contract with the club runs out in 2020 but sources claim a new deal is to be negotiated very soon.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola spoke very highly of Foden after the club's 3-0 against Oxford last week, saying:

"My dream is for him to stay 10 years and if Phil stays for 10 years, he can - in the next decade - play regularly and after (that) I don't know what is going to happen with him."

He continued: "But he has the quality to stay here for 10 years because I think he wants to stay, I think the club wants him to. But step by step, he needs to play regularly, but I think he has all the skills to play with us."

Foden is now known affectionately as "The Stockport Iniesta" by City supporters after Oxford boss Karl Robinson compared the iconic Spanish midfielder to the promising 18-year-old.

There's a great deal of pressure on Foden to succeed, particularly as a lifelong fan of City. This potential new contract is certainly a step in the right direction.
