REPORT: Sterling's brace sends City top for a short period (1-3)

Raheem Sterling scored twice as Manchester City moved top of the Premier League for a couple of hours with a win at Crystal Palace.

Sterling scored twice to put the champions two goals to the good at Selhurst Park, before Luka Milivojevic pulled one back for the Eagles.

However, Gabriel Jesus struck late on to ensure City were leaving London with all three points.

Liverpool's win against Chelsea later on in the day, meant that Jurgen Klopp's men leapfrogged Pep Guardiola's side yet again, in this thrilling title race.

City were looking for their ninth win in a row in the Premier League and to avoid a repeat of the shock 3-2 scoreline Palace won with earlier in the season at the Etihad.

Sterling had a glorious opportunity to ease the nerves just 10 minutes in, but the former Liverpool forward dragged his shot wide from close-range.

However, Sterling wasn't to be denied again and he raced through to latch onto Kevin de Bruyne's sumptuous through ball to lift the ball over Vicente Guaita.

City were dominant and in complete control of the game, and Sergio Aguero nearly doubled their advantage - but shot wide.

Leroy Sane then came close, but his near-post effort was dealt with by Guaita. City then had their best chance to double their advantage just before half-time.

Ilkay Gundogan's chipped pass into the box found de Bruyne, but the Belgium midfielder's shot from close-range was straight at the Palace goalkeeper.

City did double their tally after the break, though, and likewise Sterling. Sane was running on the wing and picked out the England winger, who scored his second goal of the game.

But Milivojevic ensured there was a tense finish at Selhurst Park, when his free-kick from the edge of the box went past Ederson.

City survived though, without any further scares and Jesus added a third on the counter-attack in stoppage-time.

THE MANAGERS

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson: "We got better as the game went on and in the second-half we gave it a good shot.

"When you go on the counter-attack looking for an equalise, you concede a goal. We weren't good enough to dent City's progress.

"Keeping a ball and stopping them from playing around you - we did the best job we could. Had we gone hell for leather then they would have gone behind us and around us."

Man City boss Pep Guardiola: "Today's game was really good after the Champions League defeat - the stage was not easy.

"We play December, January, February - every three days, one game. Why not trust the guys to do it again. We have the personality for the games. I knew we would produce a good performance."
