Manchester United defender Luke Shaw admits that manager Jose Mourinho was right to criticise him publicly and has hailed the manager's importance to his England recall...
Shaw's impressive start to the season for United has earned him a call-up to Gareth Southgate's squad for games against Spain and Switzerland.
Mourinho had in the past, criticised Shaw to the media, saying there was one time that the left-back was playing so badly that he asked if he could be substituted.
Shaw picked up his first Manchester United goal in the opening day win against Leicester and he has impressed at Old Trafford.
When asked if the treatment of him by his manager was fair, the ex-Southampton player replied: "I think he got frustrated with me because he knew I could do better. When I look back, maybe he was right.
"It was a tough few years but it made me stronger mentally. I wanted to prove to him I can do what he said I couldn't.
"I had a chat with the manager before the season and he said he wanted me to stay.
"I've matured. You could say I've gone from a kid to man. I know what I need to do to push myself. I want to play for Manchester United, stay there and prove my worth to the team."
