Arsenal manager Unai Emery has said he ‘respects’ former chief executive Ivan Gazidis’ decision to leave the club.
Following Arsene Wenger’s departure in May, Gazidis led the hunt for his successor, thus playing a large role in the 46-year-old’s appointment.
The Spaniard was speaking ahead of the Gunners’ Europa League tie with Ukrainian side FC Vorskla, 24 hours after it was announced that Gazidis would depart for AC Milan in October.
Emery said: “These three months with Ivan were very important. I know he is a big person, a big professional, the relationship with us has been very close.”
The Arsenal boss’ gratitude for the outgoing chief executive was first made public on Twitter, yesterday, when he tweeted: “Thank you Ivan for helping me to be a part of the Arsenal.”
Head of Football relations, Raul Sanhelli, will become head of football, whilst chief commercial officer, Vinai Venkatesham, takes over as managing director. Emery was quick to express his delight at working with the two. “Ivan is giving us the best next people to take the responsibility, and continue doing good work,” he stated.
Despite Emery’s plaudits of Arsenal’s Chief, Gazidis’ departure was met with a mixed reaction, with some fans claiming it will be beneficial for the future of the football club.
